Through the key words and concepts of the "East" and the "West", this course aims to introduce and familiarize students to visual or literary representations of the Selfness and the Otherness through a number of case studies..
We will analyze how different entities such as the West and the East, Christian and Jewish, women and men, adult and children, or people belonging to different ethnic, cultural or historical backgrounds were not only depicted per se in the visual media, but also represented positively or negatively, when seen through the notion of the Self and the Other. Students will also write short essays about given cases.

「東」と「西」をキーワードとして、美術を中心とする視覚的な表現や文学表現に見られる自己と他者について、さまざまな作例や事例を通じて多角的な理解を深め、自ら分析や考察を行えるようになる。

東方と西方、キリスト教徒とユダヤ教徒、男性と女性、成人と子供、あるいは異なる地域や時代の人々などが、事実として異なった外観、風習、文化を持つものとして描かれるだけでなく、「われわれ」か「よそ者」かというフィルターを通していかに肯定的・否定的に描かれてきたのかを、美術作品、ポスター、写真などの事例を取り上げて分析する。また、事例を提示して、学生が自己性と他者性について考察も行う。

授業時に2回の小エッセイを予定している。既習のキーワードや概念の応用を求めるので、しかるべく準備をすること。また、毎回の授業後、関連トピックを課題としてコメントペーパーを書いてもらう。
