Students will understand race and racism historically and transnationally as a major issue of intercultural communication and multiculturalism.
The concept of race and racism are constructed through communication, which can be broadly defined as a process of creating meanings by using verbal and nonverbal symbols. The first half of this course discusses the Western and Japanese concepts of race and connections between the two historically as well as different modalities of racism. The second half of the course examines how race and racism relate to other key concepts of intercultural communication, such as discrimination, prejudice, stereotype, and identity, and thereby understand racism as a major issue of intercultural communication and multiculturalism in Japan multi-dimensionally.

人種概念および人種主義を異文化コミュニケーションおよび多文化共生の課題として歴史的かつトンランスナショナルな視点で捉える力をつける
Students will understand race and racism historically and transnationally as a major issue of intercultural communication and multiculturalism.
人種概念および人種主義は、言語や非言語を使って意味をつくるプロセスとしてのコミュニケーションによってつくられる。この授業の前半では、西洋の人種概念の生成とその変容、そして日本の人種概念がいかに西洋の人種概念の影響を受けつつも独自の歴史的・社会的状況において生成し変容してきたのかを歴史的にとらえ、西洋および日本における多様な人種主義について考察する。後半では、差別、偏見、ステレオタイプ、アイデンティティなどの異文化コミュニケーションの鍵概念との関連を検討し、人種概念および人種主義を異文化コミュニケーションと日本の多文化社会の主要な課題として多面的な理解を深める。
