【Course Objectives】

Cultural homogenization is occurring in many regions throughout the world against the backdrop of continuing globalization. Lectures will focus on cities and modernization to enable students to consider these circumstances, and students will learn and understand a diverse array of thought in order to consider the progression of modernization through communication between cultures.

【Course Contents】

While students will deepen their understanding of problems and cultural diversity created in modern cities, they will also consider the cultural changes that Japan went through publicly during its modernization from the experiences of Meiji-period intellectuals in the Western world. The last half of the course features discussion on themes such as urban culturology in Japan from the 1970s to the present, and various problems in the world and especially in the Japanese society, which has been afflicted by earthquake disasters amidst progressing globalization.
