Through this course students will learn keywords and concepts of visual culture and the image, its power and different ways to understand the visible and its relation with politics.
We will read excerpts from the first chapter of Practices of Looking, 3rd ed. by Sturken and Cartwright, in order to familiarize ourselves with basic keywords and concepts of visual culture. Through analyses of a rich array of visual artifacts such as art works, photographs, prints, posters or videos, we will also familiarize ouselves with specific ways to see images.

美術を含む現代の多彩な視覚表現、視覚メディア、すなわちイメージの特性を、基礎的なキーワードとともに権力や政治の観点から理解する。
Through this course students will learn keywords and concepts of visual culture and the image, its power and different ways to understand the visible and its relation with politics.
視覚文化の根幹となるイメージとは何かを、Sturken ＆ Cartwright著Practices of Looking 第3版（2014）の第1章を講読を通じて、イメージに関する基礎的なキーワードについて学び、古今の美術・アート作品、写真、版画、ポスター、動画等の豊富なイメージを具体例として、イメージの特性や見ることの意味について学ぶ。
We will read excerpts from the first chapter of Practices of Looking, 3rd ed. by Sturken and Cartwright, in order to familiarize ourselves with basic keywords and concepts of visual culture.
