【Course Objectives】

The goal of this seminar is for students to determine themes for Senior Research and Thesis by connecting their awareness of various issues to academic themes, and classes are conducted to help students master the fundamental elements (research methods and the like) required to make that determination.

【Course Contents】

This seminar will focus on urban cultural studies as a continuation of Advanced Seminar 1. We will focus on the cities that have produced many different cultures, familiarize students with the literature, thought, art and other forms of expression that cities have given rise to, and further their understanding of cultural diversity. The seminar will introduce urban studies of important thinkers of 19th and 20th century Europe, and students will read and discuss excerpts of their work. The seminar will also introduce Japanese urban studies from the 1970s through the present day, and students will discuss the various issues confronting Japanese society and work to discover fields of study that relate to their research themes.
