【Course Objectives】

This course aims at acquiring basic understanding of American legal system and its societal and cultural background.

【Course Contents】

This course will start with learning American governing system - legislative branch, President and judicial branch- and students will understand the Federalism where the federal government as well as state governments hold sovereignty. Then it will go on to discuss the process of realization of law. Specifically, students will learn common law system through the analysis of the development of products liability law and also learn the unique features of American civil and criminal procedure. In the last part, the classes will focus on two kinds of human rights protection, equal protection and substantive due process under the Bill of Rights.
In each class, the lecturer will pick up representative judgements and aim at delivering vivid image and of the features and dynamism of American law. Thus, students are expected to read assigned cases in advance and to participate in classes actively.
Lastly, America is a treasure house of good legal movies. The lecturer plans to give a brief introduction of movies related to the issues of the class.
