【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to acquire an essential knowledge about American politics and foreign policy.

【Course Contents】

 While we enter the third decade of the 21st century, the United States is still predominant in the international political, military and cultural field. Maintaining the good working relationship with the US remains a vital challenge for Japan. An appropriate understanding of the US is needed without being carried away by simple and superficial knowledge. of this nation This year's lectures will sequentially discuss American politics and foreign policy with a focus on the latter. In particular, this course aims to clarify the characteristics and qualities that underlie the conduct of foreign policy.
 In the first lecture, a list of reference literature for the entire course will be distributed and a bibliography will be provided. As we start new topics in class, a summary which provides a class overview and the reference literature will be distributed. In addition, a copy of the latest newspaper articles concerning American politics, foreign policy, society, economy will be provided at the outset of each lecture along with some explanation, so that the attendees could become more interested in the US. English-language materials and visual aids will be also used.
 Please note that the class will consist of two continuous time blocks in the spring semester.
