【Course Objectives】

Where did the international environment currently surrounding Japan come from? The objective of this course is to understand a bird’s‐eye view of the political and foreign policy history of Japan which is necessary to understand the contemporary world as a "Japanese person." Moreover, students will learn that there are multiple historical views within a specific historical process.

【Course Contents】

The classes will explore what kinds of foreign relations Japan built with "Asia" and the "West" from before modern times as part of the history of the formation and destruction of the "Empire of Japan" and how that developed into Japan's postwar foreign policy. The classes will revolve around Japan's relationship with the "West" and Japan's relationship with "Asia." The lectures are scheduled to follow the aforementioned syllabus, but the lectures will be presented based on an awareness of problems which are currently happening while observing the response of the students, so please understand that there may be some changes in intensity and speed of the class pacing.
