【Course Objectives】

The aim of this course is to acquire basic knowledge about political thinkers and their social context. It will provide an overview of the intellectual history of early modern and modern Japan and explore its relevance to contemporary political issues.

【Course Contents】

This lecture examines the current of Japanese political thought from the 17th to the 19th century, focusing on the development of Confucianism and Kokugaku and the reception of modern Western thought, after an overview of the writings and social background of the major thinkers.
