【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

１）「政治」という人間固有の営みをめぐる根源的思索と西洋世界におけるその歴史的蓄積に慣れ親しむ。
２）政治思想の古典（テクスト）とその歴史的文脈（コンテクスト）との関係を学ぶ。
３）「デモクラシー」「自由」「平等」「公共性」など、現代政治を考えるうえで不可欠な鍵概念の来歴と含蓄を知る。

1) To fundamentally contemplate the human-specific activity which is "politics" and to become familiar with its historical aggregation in the Western world.
2) To study the classic texts of political thought and their relationship with that historical context.
3) To understand the genesis and significance of key concepts such as "democracy", "liberty", "equality", and "public sphere" when thinking about modern politics.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

この講義では、「政治」をめぐる根源的思索がいかに人間の歴史のなかで積み重ねられ、現代でも読み継がれる「古典」として結晶化してきたのかを学ぶ。もちろん、それぞれの古典（テクスト）には、それが書かれた独自の歴史的文脈（コンテクスト）があり、そうした歴史の文脈なしに古典を評価することはできない。しかし同時に、古典というものは、単に「過去の遺物」として時代とともに色褪せてしまうわけでもない。そのため政治思想史を学ぶには、歴史的かつ理論的な両面のアプローチが必要となる。講義の前半部では、古代ギリシアのポリス（都市国家）の営みから主権国家の成立までを、後半部では、社会契約論や啓蒙思想の展開から20世紀の政治理論までを扱う。

In these lectures, students will learn how fundamental contemplation about "politics" built up within human history and became crystallized in the "classic texts" which are still read today. Of course, each of the classic texts incorporates the unique historical context in which it was written, and the texts cannot be evaluated without that historical context. However, at the same time the classic texts are not simply "relics of the past" which fade away over time. Therefore, historical and philosophical approaches are both required to study the history of political thought. The first half of the lectures will cover the activities of the ancient Greek polis (city states) up to the establishment of the sovereign state, and the second half will cover the development of the theory of the social contract and the philosophy of Enlightenment up to 20th century political theory.
