【Course Objectives】

Is it appropriate to call the era of our present period modern, or has the modern been already over as is often said? Why does the modern matter in the first place? What does the modern mean other than mere periodization? To answer these questions, we must know the traits of the modern. The purpose of this seminar is to read basic books to grasp what the modern is. As indicated in the title of the seminar, Tracing the Outline, just a few books are hardly enough to fully comprehend the concept of the modern. Even though thinking about the modern is a formidable task, it is worthy of study. This seminar is for inspiring the students to think about the subject.

【Course Contents】

We will read three books regarding the modern. Each of them, overlapping each other, respectively deal with the theme of individual, state, and society. We will read the whole of the first book, but the second and third books will be partially dealt with in this seminar. Students do not have to purchase the books before the first class.
