【Course Objectives】

The objective of this seminar is to read Rousseau's Emile ou l'éducation, and to discuss the relationship between nature and civilization, between sensibility and moral judgement as well as between country and citizenship. In addition, students develop their awareness of issues and opinions through individual research in order to improve their investigative and analytical abilities.

【Course Contents】

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, known as the author of Du contract social (1762), wrote Emile at the same time in order to reveal his political and moral philosophy. These two works were produced in the interrelated way as the remedies for the corruption of modern civilization that he criticized in his Discours sur l'origine et les fondements de l'inégalité parmi les hommes. Based on his belief that human nature is good, how would Rousseau educate an imaginary student, Emile? Reading carefully Rousseau's treatise on education, we examine the relationship between nature and civilization, between sensibility and moral judgement as well as between country and citizenship in his thought.
Besides reading the literature, students also give presentations based on individual research. In addition, students are scheduled to participate in a joint seminar with other universities and compete in an intercollegiate presentation contest (middle of December).
