【Course Objectives】

The goal of this seminar is to get to know the democracies of various parts of Asia, to understand their similarities and differences, and to deepen their own thoughts about the meaning and value of democracy.

【Course Contents】

In recent years, the power of democracy has been demonstrated in Asia, with changes in government and policy changes driven by large-scale citizen movements in South Korea and Taiwan. On the other hand, in the Philippines and India, it has been pointed out that the leaders have become authoritarian, and in Hong Kong and Myanmar, large-scale suppression of pro-democracy movements has occurred. The dictatorships of China and North Korea show no signs of democratization. The challenges facing democracy in Asia are manifold. In this seminar, we will look into the future of Asian politics by considering a wide range of issues related to democracy in Asia and gaining a deep understanding of them.
After sharing an understanding of various issues surrounding democracy in Asia in the seminar as a whole, students will be divided into groups to conduct case studies.
