【Course Objectives】

This course focuses on understanding international human rights and some current issues.

Human Rights have been called "the last utopia." They might indeed be humankind's last utopic dream of a universal system. As a dream, we can passionately place our hopes into this system. However, as a dream, human rights can also be frustrating and seem to fall short of our expectations. Albeit hopeful and grounded in law, international human rights laws are challenging and require a constant effort to exist as law.

The main purpose is to understand the international structure of the human rights system and analyze different issues from a human rights perspective.

The objectives of this course are to help students:
1) have a basic understanding of human rights
2) develop skills to critically analyze key social and legal issues
3) think about law from local and universal standpoints
4) be able to think and analyze issues from a human rights perspective.

【Course Contents】

This course addresses the United Nations human rights system, the regional human rights system (Europe, the Americas, and Africa), and the challenges in applying an international human rights standard.

There's a need to go beyond the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and know how treaties, declarations, and human rights bodies work to make an effective human rights-based defense against violations. The course addresses basic human rights bodies, instruments, and mechanisms. Furthermore, there's a brief overview of decision-making bodies, courts, and some discussions on the challenges of a global human rights system.

Class contents will include discussions of human rights violations.
