【Course Objectives】

This seminar is designed to train students' logical thinking and presentation skills, while examining the society from the legal, sociological, cultural and political points of view.
Through examining modern social issues from a legal point of view, students can also gain insights into the modern society in Japan.

【Course Contents】

The area of law addressed in the seminar will be mainly Japanese civil law. However, since social issues are commonly related to not only Japanese civil law but also various kinds of laws, such related laws will also be covered.
The seminar will be inclined more toward learning civil-law related social issues from legal, sociological, cultural, historical and political points of view, rather than delving into doctrinal aspects of legal studies.

As for the first half of the semester, the topics for the seminar will be provided by the instructor.
The second half of the semester will be for training students' independent research skills, as well. Therefore, students will be asked to find the topics to research on and present the research in class. Students may choose any topic involving social issues related to the Japanese law or other countries'. However, since the research materials may be limited depending on the topics, consultation with the instructor will be required before starting the research. It is recommended to decide the topic earlier during the first half of the semester. For those who may find it hard to select their research topics, a list of possible research topics will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
Students are also required to write a short research paper on the topics that they selected.
