In this seminar, the students will theoretically and philosophically discuss the relationship between media and politics. However, mass communication, journalism, and current coverage are matters of no concern to this seminar. Media means a medium of things. We will discuss what kind of power, freedom, or protests exist when things and matters are represented rather than directly presented.
For the first half of the seminar, we will read a basic book introducing theoretical and intellectual aspects of media to learn about Frankfurt School, Mechanical Reproduction, McLuhan, New Media, Platform Capitalism, and so forth. For the second half of the seminar, we will read criticism of some media content. In this seminar, we will focus on Disney and animals. Though Disney seems to be mere entertainment, it involves tremendous arguments of capitalism, the twentieth century, the United States, consumer society, gender, copyright, and so forth. The concept of Animals is frequently discussed in contemporary and political philosophy. The teacher of this seminar does not have any special knowledge or interest in Disney. Students also need not have them to attend the seminar.

本演習ではメディアと政治の関係について理論的・哲学的な観点から議論します。とはいえ、マスコミやジャーナリズム、時事報道の研究を扱うわけではありません。メディアとは文字通り、媒介性を意味します。物事を直接提示するのではなく、再現・表象するとき、どのような権力や自由、抵抗が生じるのかを議論します。

前半ではメディアについて理論的・思想的側面から解説した入門テクストを読みます。フランクフルト学派、複製技術論、マクルーハン、ニューメディア、プラットフォーム資本主義といったことについて基礎的に学びます。後半ではそうした知識を前提に、具体的なメディアコンテンツを事例として扱った批評的テクストを読みます。今回扱うのは、ディズニーと動物についてです。一見すると単なる娯楽文化に思えるディズニーですが、資本主義、20世紀、アメリカ、消費社会、ジェンダー、著作権など多岐にわたる人文社会学的テーマが関連します。また動物は、現代思想や政治哲学でたびたびキーワードとなる重要概念です。担当教員はディズニーについて深い知識や関心があるわけではなく、受講者もディズニーについての特別な知識・関心は必要ありません。
