In this course, students critically examine the meaning of the terms "democracy" and "liberal arts" from various perspectives, and learn how these concepts are connected to the society we live in and our daily activities. We will also discuss the concept of democracy and the value of the liberal arts as a process of understanding social issues. Throughout the course, students will actively seek actions to solve the social issues and rediscover their own roles as "citizens”.
This course aims to help students acquire the sense of citizenship through understanding the community and the ability to engage with it. The course will focus on case studies of various social issues in Japan and abroad. In the course, students will engage in discussions and presentations about the challenges of democracy and the role of liberal arts studies. By implementing peer learning approach, students reflect upon their own opinions, share them to others, and learn from their fellow students.

「デモクラシー」や「リベラルアーツ」という言葉の意味を多角的に考察し、それぞれの概念が、私たちの暮らす社会や、日々の営みとどのようにつながっているかを学ぶ。また、社会課題を理解し、それを解決するためのアクションを模索するプロセスとして、民主主義のあり方や、リベラルアーツの有用性について議論を重ね、「市民」としての自分の役割を再発見する。

この科目はコミュニティを理解し、コミュニティに関わる能力を習得することを通してシティズンシップ（市民性）を習得することを目的とする。授業では国内外の様々な社会課題の事例を取り上げる。授業の進め方として、民主主義の課題や、リベラルアーツという学問の役割について、受講する学生同士がディスカッションやプレゼンテーションをおこない、自分の意見と向き合い、それを他者に伝える姿勢や、お互いから学び合うピア・ラーニングを重視する。
