Our lives are supported by many things. However, while mobile phones have made our lives more convenient, we are also swamped by them. In this seminar, we will consider the 'power structures' - consumerism, gender norms, modern family values, etc. - that surround things and people, with reference to recent material culture research in anthropology.
First, students will learn about new theoretical developments in material culture studies in cultural anthropology. Next, through literature readings, we will discuss how the objects around us affect humans.

私たちの生活は多くのモノに支えられています。しかし、例えば携帯電話によって便利な生活を得た反面、携帯電話の「都合」に振り回されているように、私たちはモノに使われているとも言えます。本セミナーでは、人類学における近年の物質文化研究を参考に、モノとヒトをとりまく「権力構造」——消費主義やジェンダー規範、近代家族観など——を考えて行きます。

文化人類学のマテリアリティ研究の展開を学んだのち、身の回りのモノを毎回1つ取り上げ、文献の読解を元にディスカッションを行います。
