【Course Objectives】

The course examines the policy-making process, party politics, elections, bureaucracy, the relationship between politics and the economy, and public opinion, and discusses issues that are important for understanding contemporary Japanese politics.

【Course Contents】

The course will review basic knowledge of the political roles of the cabinet, parliament, bureaucracy, interest groups and citizens' political movements in contemporary Japan, and then discuss the legitimacy of power and the effectiveness of democracy. Comparisons with other countries will also be considered. Students will be asked to read assigned literature and actively participate in class discussions.
