【Course Objectives】

This course aims to learn the basic theories in Philosophy of Law, and apply them to global problems such as immigration.

【Course Contents】

Philosophy of Law is an academic discipline which philosophically examines the underlying values of law and the concept of law itself. The primary scope of this course is an area called "Theory of Justice", in particular. We ordinary assume that law aims to achieve justice, though actual laws often fail to do that. However, what is justice in the first place? Legal philosophers have been arguing about this intriguing but elusive question for years. As a result, they propose lots of theories of justice. I want you to learn some of them, such as utilitarianism, liberalism, libertarianism and so on. Moreover, I try to apply them to some social issues, such as immigration, global poverty and so on. Though you might think that you need a special knowledge of philosophy, there are no particular prerequisites for this course. Feel safe!
