This course introduces the students to an emerging field of research in Translation and Studies (TS). Through case studies and discussions, students will learn about the relationship between intercultural communication and translation and the challenges and opportunities AI-based translation technologies such as Machine Translation (MT) faces in an ever-globalizing world.
As a result of globalization and the advancement of the information society, Japan faces many challenges in communicating in the English language in order to disseminate domestic information to the world. In this sense, the means of translation plays an important role in changing this situation. However, we know very little about translation and its role as an intercultural mediator. This course will allow students to learn how translation practices are conducted for and by active global disseminators, including bloggers and YouTubers, as well as the specific issues involved in the process and how to effectively use those technologies.
