Through close observation, tentative interpretation on selected works of Western art, dating from the antiquity up until today, students will acquire basic knowledge of art theories and understand the specificity of the art of a given period. Conversely, students will come to appreciate different works of art in a meaningful way and build his/her own opinion.
One or a small number of work(s) of art will be selected for each session. The selection will be diverse. Students will discuss firstly, about their findings through a close observation of the artwork in an attempt to elucidate the purpose of the artist and meaning of the artwork. Basic key concepts will be lectured during discussion. Students will then develop their own interpretation of the artwork taking into account theories of art, historical background or social function of art, etc.

西洋を中心として、古代から現代にいたる美術作品を観察し、解釈を試みることを通じて、時代ごとの固有性や美術の理論について理解する。また、そのような歴史的な背景を理解して、自分でも様々な作品の解釈を深められるようにする。

各回、様々な美術作品を取り上げる。履修者は、詳細な観察と記述を通じて気がついたことを出発点として、必要に応じて教員が提示した知見やキーワード等を踏まえて解釈を試みる。これらの観察や解釈をディスカッションを通じて共有するのと同時に、美術作品の持つ特性を当時の美術理論、歴史的な背景、社会的な機能などを踏まえて理解を深めていく。
