【Course Objectives】

The aim of this course is for students to understand the history of Japanese popular songs, thereby exploring the possibility of cross-generational communication. Also, students are encouraged to obtain insights into verbal as well as non-verbal elements of popular music, elements that define the genre's aesthetic and political implications.

【Course Contents】

Every week, we will focus on a single lyricist's major works, with special emphasis on the historical context in which they were created.
Usually, we talk about popular songs in light of who sing them, but it is also important to reconsider kayokyoku in light of who created the genre. In fact, a close examination of professional lyricists/composers--for instance, collaborations between Saijo Yaso and Hattori Ryoichi, between Sato Hachiro and Koseki Yuji, between Aku Yu and Tokura Shun'ichi, and between Matsumoto Takashi and Hosono Haruomi--reveals the Showa period's cultural as well as aesthetic complexities.
In particular, this course aims to explore the issues of gender and sexuality, throwing light on the ways in which "masculinity" and "femininity" are (de)constructed historically.
