The goal of this course is to introduce the history of Japanese animation, or simply anime, from the early 20th century to the present as well as to present some analytical tools for the anime works. By doing so, the course intends to deepen our understanding about our relation to the image media environments.
After introducing the definition about what the anime is, the course will show the history of Japanese anime from the prewar period to the present as well as analyze some important works in historical, cultural, aesthetic, and social terms. While the course mainly discusses Japanese-language anime works, the readings in the course will include English-written reviews and papers. By using both Japanese and English, the course will consider the issue of Japanese anime in a global scale.

この授業では、20世紀序盤以降の日本のアニメーション、より簡潔にはアニメの歴史を導入し、アニメ作品を分析するための幾つかの方法を示すことを目標とする。そうすることで、わたしたちと映像メディア環境の関係をより深く理解することを目指す。

アニメとは何かに関する定義を導入したのち、授業は戦前から現在までの日本のアニメ史を提示しながら、いくつかの重要作品を歴史的、文化的、美学的、社会的観点から分析する。授業は日本語のアニメ作品を中心的に論じるが、読解教材として、英語で書かれた批評や論文もあつかう。日本語と英語の両方を使うことで、日本アニメをグローバルな規模で考える。
