In this course, we will learn about basic methods of art history and other art studies. We will also learn the history of art history, from its birth up to new questions that it faces today.
This course will focus on Western art, covering long-used research methods such as style theory and iconography. We will proceed to cover research based on newer perspectives, such as the relationship between art and society, the relationship between images and language, the study of psychoanalysis, gender research, and post-colonialism. We will introduce important researchers necessary for those who wish to study art at the university level. The course will be grounded in explanations of the methodologies employed and analysis of the works studied; to that end, individual studies will be presented.

美術史を中心とした近年の多様な美術研究の基礎を、美術史誕生の歴史を踏まえながら、方法論を中心として学ぶ。

西洋美術を中心として、様式論、図像学などの古くからある研究方法から、美術と社会の関係、視像と言語の関係を経て、精神分析学、ジェンダー研究、ポスト・コロニアリズムといった新たな視座に基づく研究まで、大学において美術を研究するための展望を、主要な研究者を紹介し、方法論の解説と作品分析に基づく個別研究によって提示する。
