This course aims at understanding how communities in Rikuzentakata city are responding to the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, and reflecting on how their own communities can promote inclusivity, resilience, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Students will be visiting Rikuzentakata City in Iwate Prefecture which was struck by the major disaster in March 2011.
Rikkyo students will be joined by around 10 students from overseas universities: Stanford University, Hong Kong University and National University of Singapore, and work together in the field to understand the current situation of Rikuzentakata. Participants will present their learning and development with their international peers, Rikuzentakata community stakeholders, and the Rikkyo university community.
Participants will conduct field collaborative work in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, which is heavily affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Each team is given an assignment on various topics that will be provided during the pre-departure sessions. After the field work, each group will work on the final presentation.
All participants are required to attend the pre-departure and sessions and post-field work session. - Students from other universities, including Stanford University will participate in this course.
English is used as the course language.

Students are required to participate in the preparatory work. During the pre-departure sessions, each student is asked to gather information on Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and Rikuzentakata City and other areas affected by disasters. Participants are expected to produce daily individual reflections and develop a group presentation, which will be done outside of regular class time.

Approx. 60,000 Yen (inclusive of round-trip group fare between Tokyo and Rikuzentakata city, local group transportation fee, accommodation fee, and group breakfast and dinner.)
This expense may be partially subsidized by Rikkyo University as the program uses Rikuzentakata Global Campus.
<Online Class>
One of the preparation session will be conducted online.
