Spaces created by architecture are not simply large gaps. It is the presence of the architecture that gives them a feeling of calm, activity, or liveliness. Furthermore, the interiors and exteriors of architecture divide spaces, giving rise to new spaces, each with their own individual characteristics.
Along with a conceptual understanding of how to perceive space, we will look at the history of development from a functional perspective, changes in construction, techniques for creating and designing a spatial image, and even how to transform the created space, from a perspective that will lead the users of architecture to understand the architecture's characteristics. You will learn to see architecture as a tool to create space, not as a mere vessel, and will learn the basics needed to become a good custodian of architecture in the future.

建築によって作り出された空間がただ単に大きさを持つ隙間ではなく、建築が存在することによって演出された安らぎ感や躍動感、あるいは賑やかさといったものがあることを理解する。また、建築がその内部、もしくは、外部で空間を仕切り新たな空間を生み出す際に、それらの空間を個性的に演出していくことが可能であることを理解する。

空間をどのように捉えるかという概念的な理解をするとともに、機能面からみた発展の歴史、構成の変化、さらには空間イメージの演出技法や造形手法、作り出される空間の変容まで建築利用者が建築の特性を理解するための視点を教授する。単なる容器として建築を理解するのではなく、空間を作るための道具としての建築のあり方を学び、より良き建築主として将来活躍できる素養を身につける。

日常的に生活で利用する自宅や大学とは異なる種類の空間を訪れ、その空間に身を置いた時に感じる印象とその理由について考察しておいてください。設計者の意図が反映されているのか、建築空間とは別の要素がその印象を生み出しているのか、感性を研ぎ澄ましてその理由を考察し、日常には意識せずに利用している空間に込められている意味を見出す練習をしておいてください。
