【Course Objectives】

This course aims to provide students with a understanding of different aspects of the concepts of local community and sustainability, and the relationships between them, in relation to tourism development. At the end of the course, students will be able to engage analytically in the discussions about the impacts of tourism on local communities around the world and relate their own community to this broader picture, as well as identify ways to translate such knowledge to solve current issues related to the development of tourism.

【Course Contents】

The course introduces students with different perspectives and cases of tourism and local community research in various national and international contexts. Students will explore the impacts of tourism on local communities and vice versa, from a variety of perspectives including sociology, by asking in what ways tourism can coexist with local communities and contribute to the sustainable community development.

This will be a student-centered, interactive course with in-class discussions, group/pair study, and presentations. Each session is designed to give students the opportunities to share their personal experiences and views with the class. Students will be encouraged to relate the course contents to the experience of their own community through reflection papers and presentation. Audio-visual materials and Internet resources will be used to enrich the learning experience.

The course is taught in easy-to-understand English.
