The objective is to “know and understand others", and for this purpose to cultivate empathy in accordance with cultural anthropology and folkloristic methods. Fieldwork has been conducted in these disciplines (participant observation, life history, and interviews) for the purpose of knowing others. But to know others, language by itself is not always sufficient. Language is suitable for logical constructs, but human life is difficult to express in words alone. Focusing on anthropological practice primarily dealing with video and visual expressions, we will learn how to understand these kind of aspects.
While such aspects are tentatively called "images" [see Seminar A, Year 2], they are not easily expressed with video. In anthropological fieldwork where there is a common understanding of others, it is difficult to observe scenes where the “image” appears without having lived with others for a long time. As we learned in the second year seminars, this is because it is virtually impossible within the limitations of time, technology and basic knowledge. Therefore, in order to handle the techniques of visual anthropology and ethnography in this discipline by ourselves, we will focus on “movement in the city”, the fluidity of countless people constantly changing and the vernacular (non-mainstream = people's local culture and way of life), as well trying aspects of basic video work. Of course, this is a small part of the activity, and the same as in the spring semester classes, we will continue to read and critique visual works including circular reading, and documentary and film related to visual expressions in anthropology and folklore studies.

演習は講義と違って受動的な聴講ではなく、受講生の能動的な参加によって成り立ちます。指導にも関わらず参加態度が改善されない場合、受講の継続可否の判断を行います。
機会と金銭的余裕があれば一眼レフカメラ（動画機能に優れたもの）を入手することが望ましい。
文化人類学・民俗学の手法に則って「他者を知り理解する」、そのための想像力を養うことを目的とします。これらの学問は他者を知るためにフィールドワーク（参与観察、生活史、インタビュー）を行ってきました。しかし他者を知ることは、必ずしも言語のみでは十分ではありません。言語はロジックを組み立てるのに適したものですが、人の生は言語だけでは表しにくい部分があります。映像やビジュアルな表現を主体とする人類学的実践に着目し、このような部分の理解の仕方について学んでいきます。

このような部分を仮に「イメージ」と呼んだ場合［演習2年Aシラバス参照］、それを映像で表現するのは容易ではありません。他者を理解するという一応の共通了解を持った人類学的フィールドワークにおいては、他者と長く暮らすことを抜きに「イメージ」の立ち現れる場面に立ち会うこともまた難しく、学部2年次の演習という、時間的にも技術的にも、また基礎知識の面でも限られた状況では事実上不可能だからです。そこで本科目では少しでも映像人類学、映像民族誌の手法に自らの手で触れるために、「都市における動き」に着目し、無数の人が錯綜し日々変化し続ける都市の流動性やヴァナキュラーな（非主流的な＝人々のローカルな文化や生き方といったような）局面に着目して初歩的な映像作品にトライしてみたいと考えています。もちろんそれは活動のごく一部であり、教室では春学期同様に人類学・民俗学における映像表現に関する論文輪読やドキュメンタリー・映画を含む映像作品の鑑賞と批評を継続します。
