【Course Objectives】

The skill of reading academic papers in English is essential for anyone aiming to enter graduate school or become a researcher. The goal of the Seminar on English Reading in Psychology (Level 1, Beginner Level) is to steadily build students' abilities in reading English language research papers. In class, students will learn techniques to improve their reading abilities, comprehension skills, and gain knowledge about the different sections of research papers and their functions (including introduction, methods, results, and discussion). By the end of the course, students should be able to have more experience of reading in psychology articles, extracting key information effectively, and be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of research papers.

【Course Contents】

The beginner-level course is aimed at students with little experience in reading academic papers in English who would like to get more experience and improve their reading. Students who have some abilities but would like to practice and gain more experience are also welcome. In class, students will read academic papers (or abstracts) in English, little by little, each week and discuss their contents. Students will read the papers by themselves, then collectively they will be discussed in groups, and confusing passages or terminology will be clarified by the teacher. In total students will read 3-5 academic papers of around 10-15 pages each in one semester.
