By focusing on and analyzing adaptation between live action films and animated films, students will acquire methods to analyze films and animation, learning history, theory and narratives of films and animation, the features of these media, sociocultural perspectives.
The course will be consisted lectures in the first half and students' presentations in the second half. In the lectures, a live-action film and an animated film based on the same original story will be analyzed comparatively. By examining qualitative differences or similarities between images of live-action and animation in the lectures, students will deepen their understanding of the features of these moving image media. Based on this examination, sociocultural perspectives and narrative analysis will be introduced and the relationship between the form and content of the films will be considered. The course also includes lectures on the history and theory of films and animation to help students analyze them. Finally, students make their own presentations using the methods they studied in the lectures. Although the course will examine both live-action films and animated films, the focus would be relatively more on the latter.
