【Course Objectives】

The course will examine one film thoroughly from various perspectives, attempting thereby to more deeply understand film aesthetics, narrative structure, society, history and culture. The course will also provide a grounding in film history.

【Course Contents】

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (1939) is a masterpiece by an important Japanese film director, Mizoguchi Kenji. The course will closely examine the film from various perspectives, thereby attempting to understand the act of watching a film, film history embedded in a film, and the history and culture that are the backdrop to a film. In particular, the course will: (1) compare Mizoguchi's aesthetic of the long take with other films and media content, including TV programs and music videos; (2) teach the basics of Japanese film history, including the place of the works of Ozu Yasujiro and Kurosawa Akira; (3) examine the historical background to The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums; and (4) explore the relationship between cinema and other cultural traditions, such as kabuki, and the political implications of a film.
Through the lectures, students will gain perspectives on cinema and will have occasion to present and engage in discussion, achieving enjoyment in watching films and developing a critical attitude to the history and society that is the backdrop of a film. Submission of short papers will help students learn how to write about films.
