【Course Objectives】

The goal is to obtain fundamental research skills (searching for literature, reading texts, fieldwork, analyzing materials, presentation, discussion, writing academic works etc.) through completing elementary research assignments on traditional Japanese performing arts.

【Course Contents】

1. Get a general outline of research history and research methods of various disciplines that handle Japanese performing arts, such as Japanese literature, performing arts history, art theory, ethnology and ethnography, etc. This class handles modern theater and contemporary dance, together with traditional theater. It is aimed to give students an opportunity to think in which style they want to research for their future graduation paper.
2. [Practice] Interpretation of a theatre piece. It features one of the works of Noh theatre. Students will analyze the verbal and body expressions based on the analytical point of view given in the class. This will provide students with opportunity to experience the emergence of new interpretation of an art work.
3. [Practice] Literature studies and fieldwork. Each student will search newspapers and magazines for articles about local festivals, conduct hearing survey in order to inspect the transition of performance. This will provide students with opportunity to experience the joy of discovery through collecting and surveying research materials.
4. Students will make oral presentations about the two research activities mentioned above. They will receive guidance about presentation methods and writing reports beforehand.
