To become able to read Japanese classical literature on the theory of performing arts.
In this class we will do a close reading of Zeami's Shikado, in order to understand at a deep level what he is trying to say. In each class, students will be assigned a short passage. Students will translate the assigned text into modern Japanese with reference to original sources, dictionaries, annotations and previous studies, and will present their interpretations. Students who are not at ease with Japanese ancient texts or who have never before seen a noh play will be given specific instruction.

日本の古典的な芸道論のテキストを読めるようになる
To become able to read Japanese classical literature on the theory of performing arts.
すぐれたわざは、ある身体から別の身体にいかにして伝えることができるのか。たとえばパフォーマーの身体から観客や弟子の身体にいかにして伝えることができるのか。世阿弥はこうした普遍的な課題に実践的に答えようとして、深く鮮やかな思想を展開しています。その思想は、のちに近現代の哲学や演劇論が身体を考察するようになったときに、大きな刺激を与えました。
授業では、世阿弥の『至花道』を精読し、かれが何を言おうとしたのかを深いレベルで理解することを目指します。毎回の授業で、参加者にごく短い担当箇所を割り振ります。参加者は、原資料、辞書、注釈書、先行研究を参照しながら自分なりの現代語訳をおこない、解釈を披露するという作業をおこないます。古文が得意でない学生でも能を見たことがない学生でも大丈夫なように、丁寧に指導します。
