【Course Objectives】

The goals of this course are to (1) obtain basic knowledge about the achievements of the four founders of Japanese photography; and (2) understand their pursuit of the nature of photography as mechanical perception and the meaning of pursuit.

【Course Contents】

Photography is the image of mechanical perception which had been invented in the modern period of Europe forwarding machine civilization. How has photography, which had appeared in the West, been brought into Japan, and impacted upon it? Then, how the Japanese pioneer photographers, who laid the foundations of photography in Japan, absorbed foreign-made photography and made use of its latent nature of mechanical image as new and their own expressions? By asking these issues, this course introduces the history of Japanese photography from the viewpoint of cooperation between human and mechanical perceptions and explore the conditions of the founders’ photographic works as the examples of the studies of image and embodiment.
