To acquire basic knowledge of the history of Japanese performing arts and the basic concepts relating to cultural studies of the body.
When people perform, why does their body move the way it does? Although the body is physiologically common to all human beings, the way it is used varies greatly from era to era and culture to culture. For example, how a performer stands or walks is completely different between ballet and noh, and the ballet of the past is very different from the ballet of today. Such variety is thought to be influenced by the prevailing view of the body; the perception that the body "is like this and moves in this way".
In this class we will use the subject of traditional Japanese performing arts to learn how the view of the body has changed throughout history.

日本芸能史の基礎知識と身体文化研究の基礎概念を修得する。
To acquire basic knowledge of the history of Japanese performing arts and the basic concepts relating to cultural studies of the body.
ひとが芸能を披露するとき、たとえば踊るとき、その身体はなぜそのように動くのでしょうか。身体は生理的なレベルでは人類共通ですが、かつてマルセル・モースがその身体技法論において指摘したように、身体の用い方は、時代や文化によって大きく異なります。たとえばバレエと能では立ち方や歩き方が全く違いますし、昔のバレエと今のバレエもずいぶん違います。そうした身体表現のヴァラエティには、その身体が属している時代や文化に特有の身体観──「身体とはこのようなものであり、このようにして動くのである」という、身体についての理論的な理解──が影響していると考えられます（「身体」「文化」という概念そのものが問題含みですが、そのことも授業で扱います）。
さて、この授業では、日本の伝統芸能に関する文献の読解を通じて、こうした身体観が歴史のなかでどう変わってきたのか、そしてそれは身体自体をどう変えてきたのか、ということを皆さんと一緒に考察したいと思います。芸能史を時代順に概観するのではなく、トピックごとに芸能の諸要素がどのように発生し展開したのかを学びます。授業ではグループワークを重視します。日本の伝統芸能に限らず、自身の興味のある芸能（演劇、ダンス、スポーツ等）から具体的な例をあげながら、授業トピックについてお互いのアイディアを語りあうことで理解を深めてもらいます。
