【Course Objectives】

Students will examine issues related to the body and sensing from the framework of hearing. Sound is often considered to be sensory and conceptually difficult compared to, for example, visual information. In this class we will provide a linguistic outline of auditory culture by exploring various topics related to sound and hearing from multiple perspectives, such as aesthetics, media theory, cultural studies, history and technology.

【Course Contents】

The culture of sound and hearing has great diversity; not limited to commonly-termed music. In this class, students will deepen their understanding of various aspects of auditory culture, touching on specific examples or works, listening to lectures and other student’s opinions. Research topics will include music in the narrow sense, but the aim is not to analyze works, but to re-examine the concept of work itself. Through interactive discussion we will deepen our understanding of how systems and technologies have structured our ears.
