【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to understand the inter-relationship between labor policies and social welfare policies and the basic structure of welfare states, thus understanding the basic mechanism of social protection system in advanced industrialized democracies.

【Course Contents】

As global market competition accelerates and “new” social risks arise, there is a growing demand and expectation to update the social security system to meet basic needs of the people. However, global economy along with fiscal austerity undermines the state capacity to prevent poverty. Under such circumstances, how do advanced industrialized democracies respond to various risks and needs of its people? The course will aim to answer this question by comparing welfare states and social policy in advanced industrialized democracies, paying attention to the political actors and dynamism behind policy change, as well as the socio-economic context of each nations. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to explain the emergence, expansion, and restructuring of the welfare state.
