古英語文献の読解を通じ、古英語文学や英語文献学の分野における研究の基礎を学ぶ。また、同分野において英語論文を書くために必要な英作文能力の養成を目指す。

この授業では、古英詩 The Battle of Maldon を読みながら、古英語および古英語文学についての造詣を深めます。これに加え、受講生の研究テーマに即した英文を予め作成してもらい、これを添削しながら、この分野における英語論文等の書き方を指導します。
