Through close readings of Buddhist texts, students will deepen their understanding of Buddhist thought, while acquiring the capacity for understanding classical literature from different perspectives.
Reading Buddhist Texts
This semester we will continue to focus on Buddhist texts written during the Heian period. Buddhist thought comprised a fundamental world view of premodern Japanese, strongly influencing literature, art, and other cultural developments. In this seminar, students will do close readings of a few Buddhist texts, taking turns leading the class through assigned sections. Students will consider them in relationship to other examples of classical literature, and examine their unique characteristics.
