【Course Objectives】

Students will understand characteristics and formation process of labor-employment relationship and employment practice in Japan. They will also discuss current changes.

【Course Contents】

Previously Japanese employment practice has contributed greatly to Japan’s international competitiveness, but its balance is being upset. Due to increase of fixed-term and short-term employees, companies introduce performance-based or evaluation/result-based pays. Many people state that stable long-term employment and seniority system are legacy of the past. In this class, students will discuss previous Japanese employment system’s essence, formation, and issues it brought. At the same time, students will compare Japan with other developed nations in terms of salary system, skill cultivation, and labor-employment relationship to clarify characteristics found in Japan. Furthermore, students will discuss gradual qualitative changes in Japanese employment practice and forecast future labor-employment relationship and employment practice.
