【Course Objectives】

In recent years, fields such as Japanese diplomatic history and international politics have seen a higher profile in research from a “transnational” perspective dealing with immigration and related issues. This is an area of research that seeks to go beyond perspectives such as the nation-state and national economies and overlaps with imperial history and global history.
The goal of this class is to relativize previous studies on Japanese political, diplomatic, and economic history, etc. as well as to develop a de-territorial and cross-territorial correlative perspective. This is to be accomplished by reading recent noteworthy literature dealing with broad trans-national diffusion, circulation, and movement of people, goods, science and technology and the like.

【Course Contents】

For the aforementioned goal, the following primary literature (Textbooks) and secondary literature (Readings) lists are presented as an initial roster. After consulting with the participants, the literature will be read in turn. One presenter will be chosen from among the participants who will prepare an outline of approximately two A4 pages to present the issues. All participants will discuss according to the outline. The class plan should be considered as a guide since the number of participants and their reading and reporting skills will determine the number of literature presenters for each session.
