In this course, by reading carefully and intensively various texts concerning the idea of "perpetual peace", students are expected to deepen their understanding of its content, theoretical framework, one thinker's influence on other, and the connection between text and context.
In the 18th century Europe where war never ceased, various arguments on the possibility of "perpetual peace" emerged. In this course, we focus on the political thoughts of Saint-Pierre, Rousseau and Kant in particular, and read their texts with reference to the recent studies. Considering the intellectual heritages and problems that the 18th century political thought left behind, we deal with a lot of issues and propositions such as rivalry between love of country and love of humanity, peace through commerce, relationship between political regime and international peace, establishment of collective security by means of confederation of nations, problems that standing army and public debts cause.

「永久平和」の構想をめぐる複数の思想家のテクストを精読し、その内容や理論構成、思想家相互の影響関係、テクストとコンテクストの関係について理解を深める。

戦火の絶えぬ18世紀のヨーロッパでは「永久平和」の可能性を模索する議論がさまざまな形で登場した。ここでは特にサン＝ピエール、ルソー、カントの思想的系譜に焦点をあて、最新の研究論文も踏まえながら各思想家のテクストを輪読する。祖国愛と人類愛の相克、商業を通じた平和、各国の政治体制と国家間の平和との関係、国家連合による集団安全保障の樹立、常備軍や戦時国債の是非など、さまざまな論点や提案に着目し、18世紀の政治思想が現代に残した知的遺産と課題を考えたい。
