【Course Objectives】

We will deepen our understanding of the two pillars for rituals of the Roman Catholic Church, Mass and Liturgy of the Hours as well as the music used in rituals. We will study how ritual music was born and pass along as well as explain independently the meaning of music in rituals. Moreover, we will use what we learned in the church rituals and worship that in which we are involved.

【Course Contents】

The course will mostly consist of lectures. We will also place emphasis on Gregorian chants, which are the origin of Western music. We will inquire into how Gregorian chants later influenced music history. We will introduce original scores for the musical pieces taken up each time as much as possible. I would also like to let us try singing the music out loud.
