We will learn both the history of the Catholic and Protestant churches in Japan, examine the meaning of music in worship, and state our individual thoughts on topics regarding current ceremonies and worship.
The first 7 meetings will be in lecture format using videos and recordings. Meetings 8-14 will be seminars. Students will select their respective topics from the topics provided in advance based on their interests and give presentations. All class members will sing together the hymns from the presentations to deepen our understanding.

日本におけるカトリック教会、プロテスタント教会それぞれの歴史と音楽を知り、礼拝における音楽の意味を考察し、現代の典礼・礼拝における課題に対し自分の考えを述べることができる。

第1～7回は映像資料や録音資料を用いた講義形式とするが、第8～14回は演習形式で行なう。あらかじめ提示されたテーマの中から各自の関心に沿って選択し、口頭発表を行なう。発表で取り上げた讃美歌・聖歌はクラス全員で歌い、ともに理解を深めていく。

授業外学習については必要に応じて別途指示する。礼拝出席報告およびレポート（立教大学チャペル、自分の所属教派以外の教会）を課すので、余裕をもって計画を立てておくこと。（場合によってはオンライン礼拝も可）
また第１回・第２回の授業内容を踏まえて、授業期間中に最低２曲、自作の賛美歌・聖歌の作曲に取り組む課題を課す。（第8回に中間発表、第14回に最終発表）

個々の授業内容については受講生の人数や関心により多少の変更を加えることもある。ゲストスピーカーを招いて現代における賛美歌・聖歌の創作について学ぶ機会も設ける予定である。各回で扱う賛美歌や聖歌を歌うことも多いので、基礎的な読譜力を身につけている学生の受講を歓迎する。
