【Course Objectives】

The object of this course is to gain an understanding of the history of English sacred music.

【Course Contents】

This class will focus on the sacred music of the English Christian Church. This music can broadly divided into that written for, and sung by choirs (mainly in cathedrals and chapels), and that sung by congregations in local parish churches. These two types of English sacred music will be explained separately. As musical scores will be examined in class, a knowledge of music and how to read it is necessary for anyone wishing to register for the class. The class will start with the music of pre-Reformation England and continue up to the music of the 20th century.
