【Course Objectives】

This class provides the practical training that is required before one can become a certified public psychologist. By taking charge of cases during on-campus practical training, students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to conduct psychological examinations and interviews.

【Course Contents】

This class will build upon the fundamental understanding, knowledge, and skills required of a certified public psychologist that were acquired at the university level. Students will receive feedback from an instructor or faculty member as they apply their skills to provide actual psychological support to clients as detailed in (A) through (E) below. Practical training at off-campus institutions must be completed in two of the five major fields. Note: Eligible institutions are determined separately by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology and the Minister of Health, Labour & Welfare based on the Enforcement Regulations Article 3 (paragraph 3) of the certified public psychologist Act (2017, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology / Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare Notice No. 5) Practical training must be carried out at a medical institution. (A) master the following knowledge and skills as they relate to providing psychological support to a client: (1) communication, (2) psychological examinations, (3) psychological interviews, and (4) community support; (B) understand clients, grasp their needs, and produce psychological therapy plans for them; (C) practice a team approach to each client and his/her psychological therapy; (D) cooperate with people in a variety of occupations and communities; (E) understand the ethical and legal obligations of certified public psychologists.
Practical training at an external institution requires 23 weeks per specialty (8 hours per session), or a total of 368 hours for two specialties.
② Practical training in managing cases requires 85 hours per specialty, i.e., 190 hours for two specialties. ③ The faculty member in charge of practical training will monitor the training status of each trainee, and will maintain close contact with both the trainee and instructors to make certain that each trainee achieves the objectives listed in ① (A) through (E).
Students will complete the following at the on-campus training facility: 10 hours of practical training in telephone reception; 3 hours observing client interviews and attending briefings and debriefings; 9 hours participating in case studies.
By taking charge of cases during on-campus practical training, students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to conduct psychological examinations and interviews. Each student must spend 80 hours in charge of a case or cases.
