【Course Objectives】

We will think not only about the various genres of artistic expression such as dance, but will also be conscious of politics, culture, and the entire current of society as we consider possibilities for contemporary theatrical expression and dance. We will not limit ourselves to expression that is possible only through exceptionally trained “privileged” bodies. Rather, we will seek possibilities for dance and other types of expression that become possible when the body is freed from hierarchical limitations, and as we do so, we will research reproducible systems and choreographs that are possible as a result of what is called democracy. 

【Course Contents】

We will investigate physical expression both through dance exercises as well as through research into the Western dance context, especially that of post-modern dance. During each class, students will work mainly in groups on a creation with an assigned theme. They will then discuss the resulting expressions, recreate them repeatedly, and consider deeply what dance is and when it comes into existence. During the second half of the class, students will work on an actual production based on the theme and concepts fleshed out during the first half. Moreover, as the class progresses, changes may be made to the class contents and presentation format.
