By examining the relationship between books and human beings, we will understand the importance of the material form that humans give to knowledge and information.
Often people simply understand reading books as a process of conveying information. In reality, however, people used books for a great variety of occasions, such as visual and textual appreciation, singing, meditation, and reading sessions. The binding artist ONCHI Koshiro called the book "the flag of civilization."Following Onchi's words, this lecture aims to understand the history of our civilization by considering the relationship between books and people.

本というモノと人間が取り結んできた交渉関係の考察を通じて、人間が知識や情報に与える物質的形態の重要性を理解する。
By examining the relationship between books and human beings, we will understand the importance of the material form that humans give to knowledge and information.
しばしば人は、読書を情報伝達の媒介過程として平板に理解しています。しかし実際には、人類は書物というモノに特別な地位を与え、図像や文字の鑑賞、音読や歌唱、集団での読書やプライベートな読書といった、きわめて多様な交渉関係を取り結んできました。美術家・装幀家の恩地孝四郎は書物をいみじくも「文明の旗」と呼んでいます。本講義では恩地の言葉に倣って、本と人間の関係を考えることを通じてわたしたちの文明史を理解していきます。
