【Course Objectives】

Intimate relationships such as family, friends and lovers are one of the key elements to understanding modern society. In this course, we will give lectures on what kind of changes have occurred to intimacy since the modern age and what the current situation of intimacy is. By doing so, the aim is that students acquire the perspectives required to analyze intimacy, mainly from the standpoint of sociology.

【Course Contents】

Specifically, the class will proceed as follows: First, we will introduce some definitions of intimacy and then explain key concepts such as "individualization" and "pure relationships" to capture the characteristics of intimacy in modern society. Next, we will take up relationships such as family, friends, and lovers, and analyze them from the above perspectives, using specific examples. After that, we will discuss with students what kind of problems and issues exist in intimacy in the modern world, taking up phenomena such as codependence and DV.
